Information for highschool graduates applying to Bachelor’s programme

Recognition of foreign education executes Division of Education, Youth and Sport of Prague City Hall, Jungmannova 29/35, Prague 1, 110 00. You can find information regarding the procedure on their website.

Please note the recognition of foreign education is not required for secondary school-leaving certificates issued in Slovenia ("splošna matura"), Slovakia ("maturitné vysvedčenie"), Germany ("Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife"), Poland ("świadectwo dojrzałości)", and Hungary ("érettségi bizonyítvány") in accordance with a bilateral agreement between these countries and the Czech Republic.

Information for graduates with Bachelor's degree applying to Master's programme

The higher education institution compares the contents and extent of the foreign academic programme with the programme in the comparable accredited academic programme realised by the public higher education institution in the Czech Republic.

At the end of the procedure, the institution will issue a positive decision, i.e. a certification of recognition of the foreign university-level education and qualifications with unlimited temporal validity for the territory of the Czech Republic.

The decision is issued within a basic term of 30 days from receipt of an application without defects. This term can be extended in complicated cases, e.g. by another 30 days.

Please note the recognition of foreign education is not required for diplomas issued in Slovenia, Slovakia, Poland, and Hungary in accordance with a bilateral agreement between these countries and the Czech Republic.


Recognition of foreign education procedure

Before the recognition procedure, please send a copy of your diploma and transcript of records to Tereza Finrašková by e-mail - tereza.finraskova@famu.cz for an evaluation of the study programme.

Upon consideration of the study programme, we will be able to either proceed with a recognition procedure at FAMU based on similarities in study programmes or we would recommend you a different university which has programmes similar to your study programme, and they would walk you through the recognition procedure.

The procedure is initiated on the basis of a written application with the documents written below by a graduate of a foreign higher education institution (“the applicant”) submitted to Registrar’s Office FAMU  – the form is available here (please fill out information regarding your bachelor’s degree from the previous university; the second page of the application form is filled out by FAMU)

Required documents:

  • a certified copy of the diploma translated to the Czech language, a diploma supplement (transcript of academic records, etc.) translated to Czech or English

Sworn translations can be provided by a certified court interpreter, list of the interpreters can be found on website of Ministry of Justice and here or you can contact an agency(for example Court certified translations, Court certified translations) which has court translators appointed by the relevant regional court or by the Czech Ministry of Justice

The diploma must be certified by the competent authority according to the country of its origin:

        a) A certification by Apostille is not required: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Austria, Belgium, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cuba, Cyprus, France, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Korea (KLDR), Kyrgyzstan, Macedonia, Moldavia, Mongolia, Montenegro, Poland, Romania, Russian federation, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Syria, Spain, Switzerland, Ukraine, Uzbekistan, Vietnam, Yemen

        b) A certification by Apostille is required in accordance Hague Apostille Convention: Andorra, Antigua a Barbuda, Argentina, Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, Brunei, Cape Verde, Colombia, Cooks Islands, Denmark, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, Germany, Grenada, Honduras, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kingdom of Eswatini, Korean Republic, Latvia, Lesotho, Liberia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malawi, Malta, Marshalls Islands, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Namibia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Niue,  Norway, Panama, Peru, Portugal, Salvador, Samoa, San Marino, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sao Tome and Principe, Seychelles, Surinam, South Africa, Sweden, Tonga, Trinidad a Tobago, Turkey, USA, Vanuatu, United Kingdom, Venezuela

The effect of an Apostille is to certify the authenticity of the signature, the capacity in which the person signing the document has acted, and where appropriate, the identity of the seal or stamp which the document bears. The Apostille does not relate to the content of the underlying document itself (i.e., the apostillised public document).

      c) The countries not mentioned in any of previous categories must undergo superlegalisation, which means the document is verified by a representative authority in the country of the document’s origin, and then it is verified by a consular authority of the country where the document will be used.

  • upon request, supplemental information documenting that the academic programme was administered by an institution authorised to provide university-level education, or information documenting the specific contents of the programme
  • a written power-of-attorney, if the applicant is represented by an agent.
  • a payment confirmation

Note: On 1 September 2016, Act No 137/2016 Coll. came into force, which amends and supplements Act No. 111/1998, on Higher Education Institutions and Amendments to Other Acts (the Higher Education Act), as amended, by introducing a requirement for the applicant to pay a fee in the amount of CZK 3,000.

The fee is collected by the institution providing the certificate; see Decree of the Rector No. 8/2016 on fees for acts connected with processing an application for recognition of foreign university-level education and qualifications.

Please note, in the event that the higher education institution issues a negative decision, the applicant shall have the right to file an appeal within 15 days from the delivery date; or a remonstrance, if the decision was made by a ministry directly (Ministry of Education, Ministry of Defence, Ministry of Interior). The appeal or remonstrance must be submitted to the authority which issued the negative decision (appeal to the higher education institution, remonstrance to the ministry).

Appeals are decided by the public higher education institution provided this is suitable; otherwise they are forwarded to the Ministry of Education as the appellate body. The Ministry of Education shall decide appeals; either they will grant them or they will confirm the decision of the higher education institution. The decision on an appeal (remonstrance) is final.
